Many people suffer, unnecessarily, from bad breath. Bad breath is also known as halitosis. I’m sure you know what it’s like to be in close proximity with someone who suffers from it; it’s not pleasant. The majority of people who have it don’t even know that they have it. However, if you are one of the people who does realise that you have bad breath, there are ways to get rid of it.
I should point out at this point that the first step is to go and speak to your dentist to discuss what options you have for improving the smell of your breath, which will probably start with a look at your oral hygiene routine.
What Affects Your Breath
There are many factors which impact how your breath smells, so let’s start by taking a look at some of them:
1. Food – You all know that eating foods like garlic are going to give you bad breath. This is just a temporary condition until the body has managed to digest and remove the odourous food from your system. People who don’t eat healthy meals regularly will also likely suffer from bad breath.
2. Oral Health – Brushing, flossing and mouthwash will definitely help you with your bad breath. Sometimes this is the cause of bad breath, but other times may just mask the condition. For example, as in the case above we saw that eating certain foods can cause it from deep within the body system, not just from the mouth. Bacteria will build up in your mouth if you do not take your oral regime seriously. Food bits will get stuck in between the teeth, too.
3. Smoking – Smoking causes many problems and bad breath is one of them, as is yellow teeth. It’s a seriously bad habit which has no real benefit to it, like the high you might get from drinking alcohol, for example. The only way to get rid of bad breath as a result of smoking is to quit the habit. Sure, there are temporary measures which will just mask the odour but that’s not getting to the root of the problem.
4. Medical Conditions – Certain medical conditions can lead to bad breath, such as infections in the mouth, liver disease, lung disorders, etc. If you constantly have bad breath you should seek medical advice to see if it is something more serious than just poor oral hygiene.
Oral Hygiene Maintenance
It is recommended that you brush twice daily and floss before bed time to get rid of the debris accumulated throughout the day. Also, you should ensure that you have regular check ups at the dentist. The use of a good toothpaste, dental floss and mouthwash should ensure you have a good mouth and teeth. You should also change your toothbrush regularly.
Keeping a record or diary of what you eat will also help you pinpoint what foods might be causing the issue for you. Perhaps certain foods react badly in your stomach and cause an odour. If that’s the case, stay clear of those foods.
